Country Furniture

Many people like to give their home a country feel even if they live in a city. Country furniture, however, means different things to different people. Some prefer the simple elegance of hand crafted country furniture. Others prefer a more bold, rustic look with novelty country furniture items such as beds and cabinets made of logs or cow horns. Whichever kind of country furniture you prefer, the “down-home” look is a very popular one, and country furniture is not difficult to find.

The best way to shop for country furniture is to take a road trip to rustic places where country furniture is a specialty. You might want to browse the internet first for certain shops and warehouses. Avoid country furniture shops that seem to be a trap for tourists, unless you have done comparison shopping and their prices are reasonable. You might find an Amish pie chest, classic shaker cabinets, or display cabinets for your fine porcelain dishes. Another good choice for a country bedroom is a four poster bed and a cedar chest to for storing quilts. A porch rocker is a classic item and is not just for grandma. Most good quality country furniture is made from pine, oak or maple and has light to medium hued stains. Hickory and chestnut are also popular choices. Many country furniture items are painted, especially if the idea is to conceal lower quality wood. Primary colors and stencils are commonly seen on drawers and cupboards.
It is a good idea, if you prefer painted furniture, to buy a good quality piece of country furniture unfinished and paint it yourself. This way, you can ensure that the wood you are buying is durable.

A novelty country item is log furniture. This consists of chairs, tables, beds, and even coffee tables made entirely of logs of different sizes. Although this doesn’t suit everyone’s tastes, it is a great conversation piece and is a favorite among many country and western entertainers.
