Modern Furniture

Modern furniture was actually contemporary furniture in the post-WWI era when art deco was the new style. Modern furniture is evocative of such style pioneers as Coco Chanel, who emphasized unadorned elegance and Frank Lloyd Wright, who made the functional beautiful, or at least striking. Modern furniture, like the art, architecture and fashion of that era stressed functionality and streamlined designed. Gone were the frills, the rich upholstery, claws foot tables and chairs and other extravagant ornamentation. Modern furniture derives its appeal from unusual geometric designs, simplicity, and striking touches, such as chrome trim.

If you enjoy modern furniture, you might be able to find what you are looking for in vintage stores, for sale on the internet, or in used furniture stores. Although you may be searching for second-hand furniture, you may not be paying second hand prices, since retro is a popular trend nowadays and there is a significant demand for modern furniture. It is sometimes difficult to find matching pieces in modern furniture, since items tend to appear in used or vintage furniture stores with one piece missing. If you fall in love with a set of furniture that is, for instance, missing a chair, you might try to have a replacement piece made by a custom furniture manufacturer.

For your art deco living room, try an assortment of chairs, including brigh red faux leather seats, along with black leather egg-shaped chairs with chrome legs. A glass or wood tear-shaped coffee table with V-shaped metal legs is a nice accompaniment, along with a fine wooden liquor cabinet with a simple, square exterior that conceals its intoxicating contents. Simple modern furniture is best complemented with striking art deco light fixtures with striking geometric shapes and gold or silver trim. Or try a lamp in the shape of a silver ball with a light switch in the form of a string consisting of tiny silver beads.
