Retro Furniture

One man's trash is another man's retro treasure; the retro movement has really caused us to regret what we have thrown out over the years. There is a fine line nowadays between what can be considered as outdated and what is high fashion. With retro furniture, as with any other area of aesthetics, it is all in the presentation. Therefore, your retro furniture should be well-coordinated, with pieces from the same decade arranged together. Try a fully retro house or apartment with a different theme in each room; you can easily furnish a 1950s Leave it to Beaver style kitchen with a formica oval table top, and matching vinyl seats with chrome legs. Or go for the entire 50s retro diner look with a long white formica counter and round red vinyl swivel chairs with chrome bottoms.

With a home decorated with retro furniture, you can step into a new decade with every room. Your very mod 60s living room will have a lava lamp, a tear drop shaped coffee table with primary color paint splashes on top, triangle backed yellow chairs, a furry red sofa and bold blue bookcases. Your den can capture the art deco look of the 1930s with retro furniture in bold, solid lines and classic colors. Relax in a huge leather chair you won't want to get out of and get a cocktail from a hidden bar with an aged oak exterior.

The bedroom can be a 1920s flapper boudoir fit for a Hollywood star or a matinee idol. Retro furniture from the 20s is very much in demand for its classy yet ornate look. Try a movie star vanity with small light bulbs on each side of the mirror atop a glass table with delicate gilded trim. A cast-iron bed with exuberant curved designs at the head and the foot of the bed can be complemented with a striking petalled light fixture.
