Used Furniture

If you are furnishing a new home but are on a tight budget, it makes sense to hunt for good quality used furniture for your home. You can find good bargains as well as attractive pieces if you are willing to invest the time and the effort. You can go to used furniture warehouses, garage sales or charity shops. You can even find ads in your local free paper for low cost or giveaway items.

Used furniture warehouses are usually located in out of the way places on a highway where the rents are cheapest to keep overhead costs low. The selection is usually quite large, and there are often very few salespeople, so it takes a very independent-minded person to shop for their ideal piece of used furniture. Many people prefer the low maintenance approach of such places to the pushy salespeople in retail stores. Whatever used furniture you buy, make sure that you inspect each piece carefully for defects. Some are not so obvious, such as a slight crack in the place where two sides of shelf are joined. What seems to be a minor flaw can cause the whole item to collapse later on.

When you buy your used furniture, make sure that it is truly the item you want, since most used furniture stores do not have a return policy. You might want to have the salesperson hold the item for a day or two until you make up your mind.

You have found the perfect dining room set at a used furniture store, but there is one problem; there are three chairs instead of four and you have no hope of finding fourth chair exactly like the others. If it a question of a common design but an unusual shade of stain, consider buying a replacement piece at an unfinished furniture store. If the design is out of the ordinary, and if you are in love with the used furniture set, consider having a fourth chair custom-made. It is unlikely that it will cost you as much as the price difference between the new and used furniture set, and it will make your purchase worthwhile.
