Victorian Furniture

You don’t have to be on a set of a Merchant Ivory turn of the century production to enjoy fine Victorian furniture. If you want to bring the dignity of the 19th century to your living room, bedroom, or to your entire home, you will want to browse through antique stores or catalogues to find your Victorian furniture treasures.

The typical style for Victorian furniture is not quite as elaborately ornate as Old World baroque furniture, but with much more adornment than 20th century furniture. Victorian furniture for the living room includes chairs with curved mahogany legs, backs in the form of circles and elegant velvet upholstery held onto the chair with buttons which give the furniture a “quilted” look. Victorian couches are of the same design with curves on both sides of the couch. There are usually matching foot stools, and a classic Victorian coffee table and side table design is white marble on a rich cherry or mahogany base. The legs of chairs and tables are sometimes ornate, occasionally having claws feet, but not as elaborate as baroque designs. Victorian furniture is moderately decorative is usually made of high quality woods. Laces and tapestries are quite typical, along with rich velvets and floral designs.

Victorian furniture for the dining room includes a solid oak table with some decorative touches such as floral carvings, a dish cabinet to display china and porcelain statuettes and set covers made of tapestries, lace and other elegant designs. Most Victorian furniture can be found in quality antique stores, and it is a good idea to know what kind of price you can expect to pay for each item. Although Victorian furniture is abundant in such places, it is not always the best quality due to its age. Acquiring the finest Victorian furniture you can afford is worth the investigation and the effort.
